Being a mom is one of the greatest blessings, but let’s be honest—it can also be one of the toughest jobs in the world. Some days our kids are full of laughter. Other days they’re frustrated, overwhelmed, sad, or emotional, and we aren’t always sure why. We want to help, but figuring out what they’re feeling isn’t always easy.

One thing I’ve learned is that children often express emotions through play long before they can explain them with words.

That’s one of the reasons I love Inside Out. This beloved Pixar classic gives children a fun, visual way to recognize emotions like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust while opening the door for meaningful conversations between parents and their kids.

To help you continue those conversations at home, I’ve created a FREE Inside Out Board Game Printable that you can enjoy together as a family. It’s a great rainy-day activity, family game night idea, homeschool resource, or even a fun addition to an Inside Out themed birthday party.

You can even use it as a fun activity next Inside Out Party.

Your Free Inside Out Board Game includes:

  •  1 Joy character counter
  • 1 Sadness character counter
  • 1 Anger character counter
  • 1 Disgust character counter
  • 1 Fear character counter
  • 1 Dice
  • 1 game board.

If you’re a parent, teacher, counselor, or therapist who wants to use the movie to help children talk about emotions, be sure to check out my article:

Creative Ways to Use Inside Out Characters in Play Therapy

You’ll discover fun activities and conversation starters that can help children identify, express, and better understand their emotions in a safe and engaging way.

Sometimes the best conversations happen while we’re simply playing together.

I hope this printable helps create a few smiles, a little laughter, and maybe even opens the door to some meaningful conversations with your little ones. Enjoy!

Movie Synopsis

The movie brings you inside the mind of Riley, a pre-teen, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco.  Like most people, Riley is driven by emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith), as she has to adjust to a new neighborhood.  The movie provides a unique perspective on the emotions that live in the control center inside Riley’s mind.

[…] Inside Out Game (Mrs. Kathy King): Another printable board game. This one does not include any sharing prompts for thoughts and feelings, but you could easily create a more therapeutic variation. For example, create cards that encourage sharing about thoughts, feelings, and coping skills or color the spaces with the five emotion colors and have each player share a memory of that feeling when they land on it.
